Entitled Ba’it, which means “home” in Hebrew, this performance by Dana Maman is an exploration of the different music, dances, and cultural expressions collected through immigration. Dana Maman will be performing at Skirball’s Family Performance Amphitheater on July 21 at 12pm.

Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Dana “Minha Velha” Maman is the daughter of Jewish immigrant parents of Moroccan and Persian descent. She has been interested in percussion and Afro-Brazilian culture since the age of fifteen. In 2001, Maman moved to Los Angeles and became part of Capoeira Batuque, the first and longest standing capoeira academy in Southern California. There, she continued her studies of capoeira and percussion under Master Teacher Mestre Amen Santo. Maman has since performed and taught capoeira and Afro-Brazilian music around the US and the globe. A third level “Professora” (graduated teacher), Maman has over twenty years of experience and runs one of the few woman-led and taught capoeira academies in the US. Her mission is to create a healthy diverse community around Afro-Brazilian culture where men, children, and especially women can grow and excel.
