King Richard on HBO Max

Want a film that you can watch over the Thanksgiving holiday? Choose one that chronicles the incredible rise of two of the greatest tennis stars of all time, Venus and Serena Williams.

“King Richard” – playing now in theaters and on HBO Max – tells one of LA’s most amazing true stories, that of the Williams sisters’ rise from the streets of Compton to the apex of the tennis world. Will Smith plays Richard Williams, the ambitious and famously stubborn father to Venus and Serena, in a performance that many feel is Oscar-worthy. With a terrific supporting cast, this inspirational film chronicles the early days of the family’s collective venture into the very white world of professional tennis. Bucking tradition, and sticking to his “plan,” patriarch Williams ruffles feathers and struggles with his own sense of worth but with his wife, Oracene, provides a supportive and loving environment for excellence to thrive… not just once, but twice! Common Sense says the film is appropriate for 12+ because of language and some violence (Richard gets beat up by gangs more than once, and his outrageous behavior can cause some anxiety).
