Enjoy classical music with a kick with the Santa Monica Youth Orchestra (SMYO), a dynamic organization that provides tuition-free music education to a diverse cross-section of youth in an effort to bring cultural understanding, cooperation, and peer mentorship to its participants. SMYO is a program of the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Clubs.
SMYO’s musical community is reflective of the socioeconomic and cultural diversity of Santa Monica and is designed to give young people life skills that can be applied to personal, academic, and professional aspects of their lives. SMYO believes that music can be used in a positive way to bridge gaps, creating a bond between people who might otherwise have little in common. It gives several public concerts each year, including seasonal concerts and a potluck “community” concert held in conjunction with local events like the first anniversary of Caine’s Arcade and volunteer appreciation day at the Santa Monica Public Library.
