The Norton Simon Museum is hosting a Middle School ArtsLab on Wednesday, November 16. In early Renaissance paintings, gold was a symbol for heaven. Holy figures were placed against a gold background to express their importance. Explore the scenes in Guariento di Arpo’s gold-ground painting Coronation of the Virgin Altarpiece and imagine what it might feel like to view this work in a church illuminated by flickering candlelight. Then, create a collage using assorted papers and imitation gold leaf to express a moment in your life and watch it shimmer.
