Kiki’s Delivery Service

As longtime readers know, we are crazy about the animated films of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki. We always promote them avidly if there are screenings around town because they’re not readily streamable. Here’s a heads up: Spirited Away will be in theaters on Oct 29, 30 and Nov 1 and Howl’s Moving Castle from November 27-29. Here’s how to see them.

Princess Mononoke

If you have kids who love this unique brand of storytelling, ownership of the DVDs is key. Starting October 17, newly remastered versions of all the classics are available from GKIDS – you can purchase them through Amazon or other retailers.

Howl’s Moving Castle

We have a set of six DVDs of the remastered titles to give to the subscriber who makes a case for their top three titles from the list here. Our inspiration is a New York Times article that ranks all 9 Studio Ghibli titles. Take a look and you’ll get a quick sense of the richness of imagery and themes in this special world of storytelling.

Enter to Win by telling us your “Top Three” favorites (and why you chose them). Write to familysavvy@gmail.com and we will award a winner by 10/20/17.

Here’s an article from Kids Off the Couch about Princess Mononoke  – one of our top picks because of it’s strong environmental message. It’s aimed at older kids, which makes it unusually cool.

How many have you seen of the six that are being released? Here are links to the Common Sense reviews for each.
